The Coolidge Award, 2006

In 2006 the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA awarded Meryl Streep the 3rd Annual Coolidge Award. This event also included a discussion of the film Adaptation. Based on Susan Orlean’s non-fiction book, The Orchid Thief, the film stars Streep as the author.

A commission, the stage backdrop consists of three sets of cut paper panels. I chose cotton-based vellum for its translucency but also for how its texture relates to orchids. Using the idea of film as medium, the outer panels are designed as negatives; the center one is positive. Imagery consists of orchid plants and blossoms.
